The Korean War 1950-53

Case Study 2: The Korean War, 1950-53
1. After WW2, Korea was divided along the 38th parallel.
  • North Korea was supported by the Soviet Union.
  • South Korea was supported by the USA.

2. In 1950 North Korea invaded the South.
  • They took most to the country.
3. President Truman of the USA moved to help South Korea. He believed in a policy of containment to stop the spread of communism.
4. The UN organised armies from the USA & 15 other countries to help the South Koreans.
  • The UN forces led by Douglas MacArthur pushed the North Koreans back.
5. Then the communist government in China, led by Mao Tse-Tung, joined the war, backing North Korea.
  • They drove the UN forces down south.
6. Truman fired MacArthur because MacArthur wanted to attack China: he also proposed using the atomic bomb.
7. The war dragged on until 1953. By this time Truman had been replaced by Eisenhower as president and Stalin had been replaced by Khrushchev.
  • Peace was agreed and both sides held onto the same border on the 38th parallel.
